The jury returned the verdict on Thursday in the case of Caleb Flitcroft, 28, who was charged with shooting Brittney Syfert, 19, five times with a semi-automatic handgun on Nov. 12, 2005.
Flitcroft was convicted of second-degree murder and attempted voluntary manslaughter. Sentencing is set for Oct. 12.
The defense had argued that Flitcroft, who was drunk, had been in a fight and was bloodied, killed Syfert accidentally while trying to shoot Rudy Flores, the man he had fought with, on a dark road.
Syfert was hit five times and Flores was grazed by one of the bullets.
The prosecutor, however, contended that the fight left Flitcroft only with a bloody nose, and he suffered more serious injuries when he was beaten by Syfert family members after he shot Syfert.
The incident occurred during a party for Syfert’s upcoming birthday at the Syfert family home in Potter Valley.
